Sustainability
Modified By GarrettD1978 on 3/16/2009 8:52:31 AM)

Here is a definition of sustainability from the Sustainability Dictionary:  Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. How should this apply to Midland?

Re: Sustainability

I would like to see Midland become a dark-sky friendly environment for the present and future generation to enjoy the beauty of the night sky by decreasing light pollution, glare, and light trespass.  I don't want to get rid of lights, but make lighting more efficient and nature friendly for everyone.  Installing full-cutoff lighting for present and future businesses.  This would not only save our dark skies, but save in energy costs as well, and still preserve the natural wonders.  It's a win-win situation for all.

Re: Sustainability

I believe there is a real need to allow small wind turbines/solar panels throughout midland.  I can't think of anything that could make as big a difference regarding the definition of Sustainability above at a smaller cost.  Small wind power and solar panel technology are advancing rapidly and we should be planning not only to encourage their use now, but to plan in a way that does not restrict future use of the technologies as they advance.  Midland has better residential wind power potential then many other cities that have passed similiar measures.  Allowing wide spread use of wind turbines could greatly benefit the citizens of midland, as well as attract home buyers seeking homes existing turbines or homes where they can build them.

I also think it might be a good idea for the city/county governments to consider purchasing a percentage of their electric from Wind Power similiar to how other Texas cities such as Houston have done to purchase West Texas Wind Power.  This might help encourage the expansion of the wind power energy here and might even save the city money on their electric bills through negotiating with the power companies as other cities have done.  An added benefit would be the free positive publicity the city would receive.  Seeking a 100% wind power plan contract may not be feasable for Midland, but it would definitly be worth checking into simply because of the enormous media exposure the city would receive as well as potential savings.

Dark Sky certified street / area lighting options...http://solarpathusa.com/highlight-ml-20.html

They are expensive, but if you don't have power available, they are great. And no additional costs for power either.
